Undoubtedly, our commitment to sustainable architecture defines all aspects of our work: from each of our projects to our outreach and climate action efforts.
These three aspects (projects, outreach, and action) stem from a deep environmental consciousness which, combined with strong determination, transforms our work into a genuine struggle.
(1) A struggle to carry out sustainable projects with minimal impact, based on deep respect for the environment and people, (2) a struggle to reach more committed individuals, sharing our experience and research openly, and (3) a struggle for climate action in architecture that leads us to join groups working towards decarbonization in a time of climate emergency.
Today, we share our work in each of these areas: projects, outreach, and action.
(1) PROJECTS
Implementing architectural decarbonization strategies is simpler in renovation projects where embodied carbon – that emitted during material production – is already incorporated into the existing structure. This is the case with this earth and lime wall dwelling, where we are working to reduce operational carbon through bioclimatic architecture strategies. In the coming months, you can follow the construction process on our Instagram stories.
We are also developing a home in Empordà on a steep plot, where we leverage the different levels to create green roofs that become living spaces and ensure hygrothermal comfort throughout the year. This is a home for a developer who will be putting it up for sale, so if you are interested, you can contact our team for more information.
Finally, and following our strategy of focusing on multi-family housing projects, a residential model aligned with our way of conceiving architecture as a practice rooted in consciousness and sufficiency, we share with you a third Incasòl award for public housing built with bio-materials that maximizes people’s well-being and quality of life.
(2) OUTREACH
After our talks and presentations, many people thank us for our outreach work, especially highlighting how useful our sustainable materials guides are to them. Without a doubt, the most successful in recent months is our Wooden Window Guide, which includes a list of suppliers and bidding instructions.
But, beyond our professional guides, the one we are most excited to share is the one that took us over 10 years to compile. This is our learning resources guide where we have compiled all reference documents in areas such as decarbonization, air quality, circular construction, and indoor well-being, among others. It is an open guide that we will continue to expand over time and, we hope, with your contributions.
And finally, our annual compilation of essential readings on architecture, health, and climate change could not be missing. Here you will find our 10 essentials for 2024, but you can also review our compilations from 2023 and 2022.
(3) ACTION
We remain very active in participating in conferences and events related to sustainable architecture. Perhaps the most notable, due to its relevance in the sector, is the presentation day of the new European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive – EPBD, for its acronym in English – which we discussed in a round table alongside several members of AUS (Association of Architecture and Sustainability of the College of Architects of Catalonia) last April at the College of Architects of Barcelona during the event “The EPBD is already here”.
In recent weeks, we have also moderated several panels on essential topics in our sector: one on Applied Neuroarchitecture at the Life Habitat Congress and another on Circular Construction at the Catalunya Circular Congress, both held in June.
Our action is becoming increasingly visible, allowing us to reach more conscious individuals committed to reducing the environmental impact of architecture. This visibility has resulted in several recognitions that we sincerely appreciate.
In recent months, we have received the award for the best business initiative from the College of Environmental Scientists of Catalonia and the Gaudí Tribute Award for our work in architecture of natural and sustainable spaces, energy-efficient and adaptable to an evolving society.
