COAC Conference: ‘The EPBD is Here!’

On May 10, COAC organized the conference “The EPBD is Here! Challenges and Opportunities for Architects” to present the new features and tools proposed by the new version of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), approved on March 12.
Our partner Jade Serra participated in a closing panel discussion for the event, alongside experts in rehabilitation and decarbonization who are already working with EPBD criteria related to materials and renovation: Greta Tresserra, Sustainability, Innovation, and International Board Member at COAC; Licinio Alfaro, Head of the Sustainable Construction Department at ITeC; Albert Cuchí, Professor at ETSAV-UPC and President of AuS; Còssima Cornadó, Professor at ETSAB-UPC and rehabilitation expert; moderated by Andrea Sassi, member of AuS.

During the session, it was explained how this regulation will transform architectural practice and open new professional fields for architects, as, for example, in the coming years, 1 in 3 architects will be dedicated to rehabilitation. Likewise, the commitment the profession must undertake to contribute to the decarbonization of the planet was also discussed.
The session was divided into three parts. The first part reviewed the key aspects of the EPBD from a European perspective, but also a Spanish one, now that the 24-month period for member states to transpose the directive into their legal framework has begun.
The second part of the conference served to place the EPBD in professional practice. The global change potential (PCG) indicator was presented as one of the main tools for addressing the concept of decarbonization throughout the building’s life cycle.
