Starting from the objective that humanity must continue to develop and thrive across future generations and understanding that we inhabit a planet of limited resources, Swedish scientist Johan Rockström proposed, in 2009, forming a group of 28 internationally renowned scientists with whom he would develop a study to define planetary boundaries.

The study resulted in the definition of 9 reference boundaries within which humanity can develop sustainably by identifying the processes of terrestrial stability and resilience.
