Today, March 8, International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women of Slow.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, in 2021 women accounted for only 8.4% of all positions in the construction sector.

Specifically in the field of architecture, women lead three times fewer architecture practices than men. Of the total number of partners in professional practices, only 23.1% are women—less than 1/4 of all Spanish studios.

This situation contrasts with the increase in female students at universities across Spain, as according to the latest study by the Higher Council of the Associations of Architects of Spain (CSCAE), since 2000 the percentage of women graduating in Architecture has exceeded that of men by 10 points.

The number of qualified women architects has grown considerably in recent decades, but this is still not reflected in the sector, as only 33% of registered members are women—below the European average, which stands at around 39%—according to data from the Architects’ Council of Europe.

In fact, the latest version of the study The Architectural Profession in Europe 2022 by the Architects’ Council of Europe was recently published, highlighting that the gender pay gap in the sector at European level has fallen from 32% in 2016 to 17% in 2022. However, in Spain this figure remains at 30% in 2022, so there is still a long way to go.
