In fact, timber homes, while generally more expensive in terms of upfront cost, offer sustainability and thermal comfort advantages that can pay off in the long term.
In this article, we will look at how timber construction systems adapt to different plots and families, and we will address the most common questions about the material’s durability in the face of moisture, fire and the passage of time. We will also explore how timber home construction has become a more popular option thanks to technological advances that have improved the strength and efficiency of this type of housing.

In Spain, the wood used in construction mainly comes from forests in the Pyrenees. This wood is known for its uniformity, slow growth and high strength. In addition, its flexibility and excellent strength-to-weight ratio make it a versatile and highly efficient material for construction.
Wood is a renewable and abundant resource, increasingly valued in the construction industry, especially in the context of sustainability and climate change. In this regard, certifications such as PEFC and FSC ensure that the wood used comes from responsibly managed forests.
Spain’s timber industry is growing, with companies such as Egoin, Finsa and Fustes Sebastià at the forefront, producing high-strength timber elements. These companies manufacture solid and laminated timber up to 12 metres long using local wood, demonstrating the potential of native species—such as pines, firs, chestnuts and eucalyptus—in the construction of sustainable homes.
As for the main properties of wood, it is worth highlighting:
Its ability to be a flexible and versatile building material.

Now, below we present 10 keys to building a timber home that will certainly be very useful going forward.
1. Assess Construction Possibilities
Before starting to design and build your timber home, you should consider all the options available so you can choose what best suits your project.
Today, there is an endless range of products for building a timber home. There are posts, beams, fibre or cross-laminated panels, flooring, cellulose or cork insulation, and much more.
However, if you are clear that you want a natural timber home, you should always choose materials that, as far as possible, are 100% organic and sustainable, and that do not contain—or have not been treated with—toxic products that diminish their natural properties.
Fibre panels, for example, should be ruled out for this reason. Although at first glance they may seem eco-friendly, the reality is that so-called OSB panels are bonded with formaldehyde, a component that the European Union has declared a highly dangerous carcinogen.
This does not mean you must rule out all treated wood products and derivatives, but you should at least be careful with products that are in contact with the indoor environment of your home—that is, the air you breathe and the surfaces you touch.
In terms of design, a timber home also supports many typologies, from more modern homes where the wood is worked with machined cuts that give it a uniform appearance, to artisan-built houses that result in a rustic style.
Finally, another advantage of building in wood is that, unlike concrete, which needs a certain curing temperature, wood is a “dry” construction material, so you can build at any time of year and in any climate.
This makes it a suitable building material for all latitudes, although it is certainly more common in cold countries where the use of mortar or concrete is not typical, as the cohesion of the mix is much more difficult due to low temperatures.
2. Budget
Setting a maximum budget is extremely important, whether you build in wood or not.
Knowing the price you are willing to pay for your home narrows the range of options, but it also helps you prioritise elements and be consistent with your investment.
That does not mean you should compromise on the quality of materials and construction elements. You simply need to assess where you want to make a long-term investment and commit to it.
Building a home always involves balancing square metres, energy efficiency and material quality. Determining how much weight each component carries in that balance is up to the client, who must communicate their needs and priorities to the architect.
At our studio, Slow Studio, we sometimes welcome clients with tight budgets who want to build a timber home, and the reality is that building in wood with a high-quality construction system is more expensive than building with conventional methods.
In any case, you should always remember that choosing a construction system should not be based solely on personal taste; energy efficiency has a great deal to say. A timber home does not store heat from the sun, which is very important in a passive house, so you should always combine wood with other systems—such as a concrete slab or a brick wall—that allow you to store heat.

3. Define the structure
One of the 10 keys to building a timber home with guarantees is choosing the right structural system. Today, there are companies that sell catalogue prefabricated houses with low-cost structural systems manufactured in Eastern European countries, which are closer to the three little pigs’ house than to a solid home for life.
Wood is one of the lightest structural materials, with excellent mechanical properties, as its fibres provide tensile and compressive strength.
In addition, thanks to its average weight of just 400 kg/m3—which is very low compared to concrete (2,500 kg/m3) or steel at 7,000 kg/m3—wood reduces the total load the structure transfers to the foundations. This means the foundation footprint can be reduced, helping you save on construction costs.
Aside from weight, there is another design point you need to determine: choosing the type of structure that best suits your home.
There are many structural systems today, but when working with wood as the raw material, the most commonly used are Balloon Frame (light framing) or the CLT system (load-bearing timber walls).
The timber construction system using light framing consists of a structure of solid posts with a small cross-section, stabilised by forming a kind of box structure at intervals of around 1 metre.
It is a well-known system, especially in the United States and Canada, but it is increasingly used in Europe as it is economical and strong, reduces assembly and on-site time, and uses an ecological, renewable and easily recyclable material—wood. With the light framing system, you can create bespoke projects tailored to each client’s needs.
CLT panels are cross-laminated panels made by gluing a succession of layers of wooden boards, which often come from northern European woods such as Norway spruce.
They have PEFC certification, which guarantees that the raw material used comes from an ecologically, economically and socially responsible forestry operation.
Thanks to their wide range of formats, they allow great freedom in architectural design. Installation is straightforward and can be done dry, which greatly reduces construction time.
In addition, structurally they are very strong and stable. They allow for settlement deformation and other possible post-installation adjustments.
4. The wall and the façade
If you choose to use wood on your home’s façades as well, you need to assess all the options available—and there are many.
The market offers a wide range, and it is the client who must choose based on the exterior aesthetic they want for their home. That said, you must ensure the outer layer includes protection against water, a wind barrier membrane, and a protection system to prevent water and moisture from rising by capillary action where it meets the ground.
Protecting the façade from the elements is vital to ensure the home’s durability. Exterior wood maintenance should be carried out annually, treating it with natural oils and varnishes. There are products, such as larch resin, which, despite giving the wood a grey tone, are very resistant and durable, meaning you can avoid maintenance tasks for a long time.
In fact, at our studio we do not usually recommend wood on façades unless it is completely protected from the sun, or unless we work with woods such as larch, accepting that they will take on a grey tone.

5. Internal partitions
As for internal partitions, they are built in a very similar way to plasterboard partitions, but using wood as both the structural and finishing element.
First, a timber stud structure is installed. The cladding is done with plywood boards, also timber, which are fixed to the studs with screws. It is recommended to use cellulose-based boards (such as Fermacell).
Services and acoustic and/or thermal insulation can be placed within the partitions that separate rooms and define the space.
Another option is to build the partitions with solid timber panels. In these cases, you will need to route services elsewhere, and these solid walls can be used as part of the home’s structure.
Finally, if you want radiant walls—a very healthy heating system—you should combine these partitions with a panel with greater thermal inertia to retain the heat generated by the heating pipes.
Surface finishes should only be applied in high-use areas (frequently touched) or where there is a risk of getting wet due to contact with water. You should also sand surfaces finely, leaving them smooth to avoid splinters that could cause injury. During sanding, it is very important to wear masks and ensure good ventilation to protect the respiratory tract from the dust produced when sanding wood.
6. On-site installation / Construction
The on-site installation process is complex but, when done properly, it can have a positive impact on the subsequent performance of your timber home.
First, you must control, from the earliest stages, the moisture level to which your timber is exposed. It should not be kept at moisture conditions of 18% (interior timber) and 10% in the case of furniture.
Finishing or protective products must always be applied in compliance with the instructions and following the supplier’s guidance. Ambient temperature and humidity conditions must be controlled, and the wood must always be protected from direct sunlight, as it can damage it.

7. Insulation
Capturing heat or cooling a home is of little use if we then allow it to dissipate. To prevent this, we must install an appropriate thickness of thermal insulation.
The thickness will depend mainly on the local climate, but generally we use a minimum thickness of between 15 and 20 cm.
Today, conventional homes use between 8 and 12 cm of insulation, which, while an improvement compared to insulation from decades ago, forces reliance on heating or air conditioning consumption to maintain a good indoor temperature.
It is vital to ensure there are no thermal bridges that undermine the insulation investment. A thermal bridge is a point in the building envelope where, whether due to a design error, construction defect or even lack of knowledge, insulation continuity is lost and considerable heat loss is generated.
At the same time, you should bear in mind that the most effective timber construction is the one that completely seals the walls against air leakage, working somewhat like a passive house, where you minimise heating and cooling needs.
In these cases, it is important to consider mechanical ventilation systems that allow constant renewal of stale indoor air without losing comfort conditions in the home’s habitable rooms.
8. Waterproofing
On exterior surfaces, you will need to waterproof all surfaces, as exposure to the elements makes them vulnerable to moisture. As mentioned above, there are resins and other treatments that protect the wood, preventing deterioration and extending its lifespan and performance.
Indoors, you should waterproof only those areas that, due to contact with water, are more likely to suffer the effects of moisture.
In any case, it is important to ensure that the products you use are non-toxic and do not contain solvents that could affect your health. Harmless resins or products should have a pleasant, neutral smell.
Likewise, you should bear in mind that waterproofing wood can act as a vapour barrier and cause condensation inside the home. For this reason, the use of a breathable membrane that allows moisture to dry out is recommended.

9. Durability – Protection against insects and rodents
Wood is an organic material and therefore deteriorates with water and sun. However, there is a third factor that can damage this material: insect and rodent attacks.
Insects are wood’s main enemy, especially termites. For this reason, you must protect wood—particularly in structures, walls and roofs—against this dangerous pest.
The most harmless way to avoid chemical treatment of wood is a proper cutting and drying process at the sawmill. This ensures termites lose interest in the wood due to the lack of nutrients.
Today, many private homes are built with wood that has been properly treated at the sawmill without any chemical protection, and they are not attacked by any type of insect.
The last of our 10 keys to building a timber home addresses a topic that concerns many of our clients: fire risk. Even so, wood has been one of the most versatile and widely used construction materials for centuries.
It is true that fire may seem, at first glance, to be wood’s natural enemy. However, today, technological advances and in-depth knowledge in this field allow us to build with wood without having to worry excessively about fire risk.
It is essential to understand that, although wood burns easily, it does so mainly on its surface. This means that by increasing the thickness of the wood or treating it appropriately, its fire resistance increases significantly.
In general, the areas most susceptible to fires within a home are kitchens and electronic devices. A fire usually starts when a spark comes into contact with flammable materials such as fabrics (curtains, rugs, carpets) or furniture.
In addition, wood has the advantage of being a low thermal conductivity material, which means that, in the event of a fire, the temperature will not spread quickly to other areas of the home. This provides greater safety and more time to react before the fire spreads.
As with all building materials, wood must comply with strict fire prevention regulations.
