July 28, 2022 Earth Overshoot Day

Today, July 28, Planet Earth has exhausted its annual quota of renewable biological resources and will begin to use non-renewable resources.

Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by dividing the planet’s biocapacity by humanity’s ecological footprint over a year.

This is a way to quantify the destruction of our planet by associating it with the capitalist model of debt, where it is possible to spend more resources than we have by taking out a loan. In 2022, we will use 5 months of planetary credit.

However, Earth’s credit is not repayable, since unlike bank loans that are repaid by generating more money, humans are not capable of generating bio-resources.

Earth Overshoot Day moves forward by several days each year, demonstrating that we are unable to curb the #climatecrisis.

Our sector, construction, accounts for approximately 60% of our planet’s CO₂ emissions, and of these, around 90% are produced during the extraction and transformation of materials.

Building with bioavailable, renewable, recoverable materials with a reduced ecological footprint is the only path to sustainability.
