Regulating Carbon in Construction. Article in EcoHabitar

In its summer issue, EcoHabitar magazine No. 78 Summer 2023 requested an article from our studio on decarbonization: Regulating Carbon in Construction.

The article, written by our partner Jade Serra, is the first in a series of articles on decarbonization in construction that will be published in successive issues.

This first installment addresses the difference between operational and embodied carbon, highlighting the need to pay attention to the latter, which corresponds to the production of building materials. As building efficiency increases, its proportion in the total CO2 emissions of buildings will also rise. The article analyzes the decarbonization pathways initiated by some European countries and helps us understand that all of them begin by accounting for emissions to establish concrete limits. Furthermore, it proposes measures to reduce the carbon footprint through the circular economy and the use of biomaterials, warning about the sector’s need for awareness regarding resource limitations that have always existed, now more evident than ever, and the necessity of a paradigm shift: resource sufficiency.
