These solutions permanently reduce energy demand and improve the comfort and health of those who inhabit the dwelling.

Another topic addressed is the future European requirement to quantify the embodied carbon of construction materials, expected this decade. This change will provide a decisive boost to the use of local, natural, bio-based, and reclaimed materials, favoring architecture with lower environmental impact and based on circular economy principles.

The interview is illustrated with several Slow Studio projects that show how these strategies translate into homes capable of offering thermal comfort, well-being, and a close relationship with the environment through passive solutions and low-impact materials.

We would like to thank Arquitectura y Diseño for their interest in our work and the opportunity to share our understanding of architecture. We believe that building healthy, efficient buildings with a low environmental footprint is no longer a future option, but a present necessity.

You can read the full interview in Arquitectura y Diseño at the following link.

When we talk about sustainable architecture today, what has ceased to be a promise and has already become a standard in your projects?

For us, it ceased to be a promise many years ago. The first standard is achieving homes with practically zero energy consumption, capable of maintaining comfort throughout the year without relying on heating or air conditioning systems.

To this is added a second aspect that is essential today: the use of biomaterials and low embodied carbon materials. The great pending challenge of architecture is no longer solely to reduce the energy consumption of buildings, but also the environmental impact of the construction materials themselves. The processes of extraction, manufacturing, and transformation generate a very significant portion of global emissions, and Europe will require the calculation of embodied carbon in materials from 2030 onwards. In our case, working with low-impact materials is already part of our design approach.

The third standard is indoor environmental health. We design spaces with naturally renewed air, healthy materials, and strategies that not only guarantee comfort, but also the well-being and health of people.

What materials or construction systems do you believe will define housing in the next decade?

The next decade will be marked by European decarbonization regulations. Just as today we calculate the economic budget of a building, it will become increasingly important to also calculate its carbon budget. In fact, from 2030 onwards, European regulations will require quantifying the embodied carbon of materials, and countries such as Denmark, France, and Belgium are already advancing in this direction.

This change will bring about a profound transformation of the sector. Local, bio-based, and naturally sourced materials will regain prominence, such as wood, earth, lime, and stone—materials that have been part of construction for centuries and that today recover their full relevance due to their low environmental impact.

At the same time, reclaimed materials will play an increasingly important role. When embodied carbon becomes part of the project, reusing elements from renovations significantly reduces their environmental impact and gives them great value. In short, the future involves combining biomaterials and reclaimed materials within a circular economy model applied to architecture.

In energy efficiency, where is the house that barely consumes heading: self-consumption, aerothermal systems, passive design?

We believe the priority should be to invest in what lasts hundreds of years. Active energy production systems, such as aerothermal systems or photovoltaic installations, evolve very rapidly, require maintenance, and eventually become obsolete over time.

In contrast, passive strategies remain throughout the entire lifespan of the building. Improving insulation, increasing thermal mass through walls or floors capable of storing heat and cold, ensuring good airtightness, preventing uncontrolled thermal exchanges, optimizing solar protection, and promoting cross ventilation are permanent solutions that continue to function generation after generation.

That is why we understand that passive design must be the foundation of any efficient home. Afterwards, active systems can complement that strategy, but never replace it.

Beyond technique, how does sustainability influence the well-being of those who inhabit the house?

Sustainability consists, to a large extent, of learning to work with the natural elements of the environment: the sun, ventilation, orientation, and natural materials capable of storing heat in winter and maintaining coolness in summer.

When architecture harnesses these resources, the result is not only a more efficient building, but also a healthier home. Air quality, thermal stability, the use of healthy materials, and the relationship with the natural environment directly influence people’s well-being.

Ultimately, we understand that human beings are part of the natural environment and that architecture should help us relate to it. That connection is what allows us to build spaces that promote both comfort and health.

If you had to imagine the home of 2040, what would be different compared to what we build now?

During recent decades, the abundance of energy from fossil fuels allowed buildings to be designed prioritizing almost exclusively aesthetic criteria, without paying much attention to aspects such as orientation or the climatic behavior of the dwelling. If a house overheated, it could always be resolved through climate control systems.

The home of 2040 will be much more aware of the importance of designing from climate. It will be architecture capable of protecting itself from heat in summer, harnessing solar energy during winter, and establishing a much closer relationship with the environment.

It will also be a home where health and well-being will play a leading role. Passive systems, natural materials, and the reduction of environmental impact will cease to be an added value and become the foundation of architecture capable of guaranteeing comfort, health, and long-term sustainability.

Slow Studio has been interviewed by the magazine Arquitectura y Diseño to analyze how sustainable architecture will evolve in the coming years.
