This Sunday, July 6, TV3’s 30 Minuts aired Construint el canvi, a documentary that explores how architecture and construction are evolving to respond to the climate emergency and the need to reduce the sector’s environmental impact.

Slow Studio takes part in this feature by sharing its experience through two of its most representative projects, Casa en Serra d’Ordal and Casa en Costa Daurada, two homes that show how bioclimatic design and passive architecture can deliver healthier, more comfortable and more efficient spaces without relying on complex HVAC systems.

Throughout the documentary, the studio’s partners, Víctor Vergés and Jade Serra, reflect on the role architecture must assume today. Faced with the need to build more homes, we argue that the answer cannot be to build faster and with lower quality. On the contrary, this challenge requires designing buildings capable of providing comfort, wellbeing and a low environmental impact throughout their entire service life.

The feature also highlights an idea we fully share: housing must be understood as a refuge. A space that protects people from both cold and heat, making use of orientation, solar gain, cross-ventilation, thermal mass and natural materials rather than depending on energy consumption to ensure comfort.

In our case, Casa en Serra d’Ordal exemplifies this approach to design. The central bioclimatic courtyard brings sunlight into the heart of the home in winter and promotes natural ventilation in summer, while the combination of natural materials provides thermal stability and improves the indoor environmental quality of the spaces. These are strategies that aim to make architecture work in favour of people and the climate.

We are especially pleased to share this documentary with professionals, researchers and companies who are also driving this transformation of the sector, including Ecococon, Fetdeterra, Tallfusta, Casetadepalla, Albert Cuchí and Greta Tresserra, as well as many other stakeholders committed to more responsible construction.

Construint el canvi shows that decarbonising construction is no longer a vision of the future, but a process that is already underway. Collaboration between architects, manufacturers, researchers and universities will be key to accelerating this change and demonstrating that it is possible to build higher-quality buildings with a lower environmental impact, ready for the climate challenges of the coming decades.

At Slow Studio, we are very grateful to have been able to be part of this documentary and to help make visible an approach to architecture that places people’s wellbeing and respect for the environment at the centre of the project. We believe that building better is not an option, but a shared responsibility.
