Is there anything that differs from the previous question related to wellbeing?

The health of an indoor environment is closely related to air quality, which directly depends on its renewal to limit the presence of CO2 and also the presence of other polluting substances, such as toxins found in building materials, paints, furniture, or cleaning products.

Today, however, it must be considered that the concept of health must be viewed holistically, so we must not only take into account our physical health but also emotional health and social health, according to the most recent definition by the World Health Organization.

Therefore, not only living in an environment free of pollutants both outside and inside our home, but also having access to green and natural spaces where we can interact with a stable community of people, is the primary premise for ensuring our health from a holistic perspective. We must consider all scales, from the urban scale at the level of city planning and green areas, the neighborhood scale where spaces for neighborly interaction are generated, and the home scale where we can have a greater impact.

Can everyone have a home that ensures wellbeing and health?

The quality of a home, its health and wellbeing, is defined by the external environmental conditions, the internal sanitary conditions, and the building’s layout and construction system.

Generally, if we live in a healthy, low-pollution environment with vegetation, and our house has good sun exposure and the possibility of natural ventilation with fresh, healthy air, we already have a good part of the equation won.

Conversely, if we live in an urban environment with high levels of pollution, without vegetation, or in a home without direct sun exposure, then we will have little impact on our quality of life, no matter how many small actions we take to avoid toxins or pollutants in the home. If our refuge is not located in an appropriate, healthy place, with sun, vegetation, and the possibility of community interaction, our quality of life will be conditioned by factors beyond our control.

In situations where we have solar radiation and a natural, unpolluted environment, with access to public spaces for interaction that allow us to enjoy community life, it is possible to take small steps to improve wellbeing and health at home without a large investment, by utilizing outdoor air for renewal through ventilation, reducing the presence of toxins and pollutants inside the home, improving efficiency through passive systems, promoting the presence of vegetation, or fostering community relationships.

Where to start making your house healthy when it is already built and inhabited?

The WHO estimates that we spend 90% of our time indoors and that these spaces are usually 4 to 5 times more polluted than the outdoor environment. This situation is caused by some of the following factors:

The lack of air renewal leads to the accumulation of CO2 and other pollutants, so the first premise is always to ensure good ventilation. If we live in a polluted urban environment, then we should consider installing a mechanized air renewal system with a filter.

Avoid excessive use of heating and air conditioning, as both systems excessively dry out the environment. An environment with relative humidity below 50% causes dryness in our mucous membranes, reducing our defenses and exposing our body to the entry of viruses and bacteria.

It is important to note that the presence of toxins in the indoor environment is due to the presence of volatile organic compounds emitted from various materials and products. These can be reduced by using natural cleaning products that do not contain aggressive health toxins such as biocides and fungicides; avoiding furniture with glues or furniture made of chipboard and plywood; not installing flooring such as carpets, PVC, rubber; prioritizing the use of natural insulation over rock wool or glass wool; dispensing with coating products such as plastic paints, varnishes, vinyls, and plasterboards; and opting for textiles such as rugs and curtains made of natural fibers, which do not emit formaldehyde.

When should you change homes because it is detrimental to your health? How do you realize it or when do you consider it? Is it possible to renovate instead of changing to achieve improvement?

To understand if the place we live is suitable and improves our health and wellbeing, a holistic assessment from all levels is necessary.

Health is a state of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

The first scale is the city scale.

In this sense, the first thing we must do is understand if the urban environment in which we live is adequate and allows us to live happily. This depends on factors such as the level of pollution in the environment where our home is located – for example, if there are polluting industries nearby or if we live on a high-traffic street – the availability of a network and a community in which to interact, access to services, the presence of vegetation and natural surroundings, etc.

The second scale is the housing scale.

In our home, there is a primary factor that defines health: the incidence of heat and sunlight. Not having access to direct sun exposure also represents a situation that is difficult to improve, as it prevents us from implementing the most important passive strategies such as solar gain through openings or greenhouse galleries or patios. The sun is life; that is, it is light, heat, energy, and consequently health.

These two premises do not depend on us, and that is why they are the first checks and assumptions we must make when considering renovations or changing homes. If the environment is adequate and our home has good sun exposure, then it is possible to renovate, and in this case, we must do so from three perspectives:

Ensuring that the systems and materials we use improve the health of the space.

Improving energy efficiency through passive strategies and thereby achieving a reduction in active energy demand.

Bearing in mind that the interventions we carry out not only affect us but also have an impact on the planet in terms of resource use, sustainability, circularity, or pollution from the production processes necessary to carry them out. In this sense, carrying out interventions with sustainability criteria implies a broader view of respect and empathy towards our environment and future generations.

Which orientations or environments should be avoided?

It is necessary to avoid north-facing orientations or north-sloping mountain sides due to lack of sun access. The sun is synonymous with life; it provides us with light, heat, energy, and fills us with vitality.

Furthermore, it is important to avoid polluted urban environments, without vegetation, without a stable community, and without services that hinder the achievement of a conscious and fulfilling lifestyle.

And which materials SHOULD be present and which should NOT?

It is necessary to evaluate materials from a holistic perspective: their thermal performance, sustainability, and health. Therefore, it is essential to opt for natural, healthy materials with a reduced ecological footprint and local origin.

On the other hand, we must avoid all types of plastics or petroleum derivatives and materials with a high ecological footprint, such as cement and steel derivatives, which, despite being recyclable, have a high CO2 impact and limited availability.

You can read the full article What should a house have to ensure the health and wellbeing of its inhabitants? at the following link.

Hola! magazine’s digital edition features an article on HEALTH AND WELLBEING AT HOME, which featured our studio as an expert in sustainable, ecological, and healthy architecture.
