Scientists warn that if we do not initiate a profound and urgent transformation of our societies, climate change will advance until it makes the earth an uninhabitable place. <\/p>\n<p>Faced with this prospect, all humans should assume responsibility toward future generations and the millions of people already experiencing the effects of climate change, carrying out a struggle to transform the way we inhabit our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Architecture and construction, responsible for 40% of carbon emissions, play a fundamental role in the regeneration process we must undertake.<\/p>\n<p>Our studio is based on this essential premise: becoming aware of the historical moment we are living in, assuming our responsibility as human beings, and bringing this awareness to every facet of our lives. Our profession, architecture, must align with our understanding of life, and in our case, it stems from a deep environmental consciousness and respect for the health of people and the planet. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slow Studio&#8217;s philosophy centers on sustainability and bioclimatic design. How do you balance architectural aesthetics with energy efficiency in your projects? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For us, the project begins with an integral and holistic vision, in which aesthetics is one more requirement of a constructive design that must satisfy multiple needs such as climatic performance, comfort and well-being, functionality, economy of resources and means, reduction of ecological footprint and environmental impact, as well as the quality and health of the interior environment.<\/p>\n<p>This is why we demand the maximum from every decision we make, every constructive solution, and every material we incorporate. We never introduce a solution that responds solely to an aesthetic function, and generally aesthetics ends up being the result of a harmonious design that is efficient in energy and resource utilization, and that values noble and natural materials with constructive solutions of high technical rigor. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, awareness of environmental impact is stronger than ever. What materials do you prefer to use in your constructions to reduce the carbon footprint and maintain an ecological approach? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We prioritize natural and healthy materials, of local origin and that generate minimal environmental impact, preferably renewable (such as wood, cork, or plant fibers) or highly abundant (such as earth or clay), and that form part of a closed cycle so they can be returned to the earth or recovered for reuse at the end of their useful life.<\/p>\n<p>We avoid the use of highly industrialized materials that require furnaces powered by fossil fuels and whose transformation processes emit large quantities of CO2, such as concrete, steel, and plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding material selection, the United Nations together with Yale University and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (Global ABC) published a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalabc.org\/resources\/publications\/building-materials-and-climate-constructing-new-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> this year in which they expressly recommend stopping the use of concrete, steel, and plastics and promote transition materials such as ceramic brick and decarbonized materials such as wood, bamboo, plant fibers, and earth. But beyond material selection, perhaps the most notable aspect of the report is that the first premise is not to build or to build less. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of Slow Studio&#8217;s pillars is the concept of &#8220;healthy housing.&#8221; What specific aspects do you integrate into the design to improve the well-being of the people who inhabit the spaces you create? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the studio, we start from the premise of designing living spaces that respect and promote the health of the people who occupy them, being aware that there is no health on a sick planet.<\/p>\n<p>It is useless to work on a project in which I guarantee the health of the occupants if to do so I use materials that have had a high environmental impact and have compromised the health of other living beings and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, when we speak of health, we must start from a holistic concept of health, as defined by the WHO, a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being.<\/p>\n<p>This is why, beyond speaking of health in living spaces, we speak of biohabitability, understood as the capacity of a space to promote physical and psychological well-being while respecting the health of our planet.<\/p>\n<p>The essential design aspects of biohabitability are based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The environmental comfort of a space: ensuring <strong>hygrothermal comfort<\/strong>, natural <strong>ventilation<\/strong> and lighting, and acoustic comfort<\/li>\n<li>Respect for the health and well-being of occupants: through the use of <strong>natural and healthy materials, the application of neuroarchitecture criteria, and achieving excellent indoor air quality.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>ustainability and resource efficiency: through <strong>reducing energy demand and energy efficiency, water management, and the use of locally sourced materials with reduced environmental impact that can be recovered or returned to the earth at the end of their useful life.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The r<\/strong>elationship with nature: ensuring <strong>visual connection with natural environments, integrating and reducing the building&#8217;s impact on its surroundings, and using vegetation in the design of interior and exterior spaces.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Re<\/strong>silience and adaptability: ensuring <strong>resilience to climate change and the flexibility of the space to meet the changing needs of the people who inhabit it.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passive design is a fundamental part of your projects. Could you briefly explain what passive design principles you apply and how these impact the daily lives of the inhabitants? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passive design is based on ensuring hygrothermal comfort without having to resort to active heating or cooling systems. To achieve this, we must start from a controlled exchange with the natural resources of the exterior according to the climatic conditions of each moment. <\/p>\n<p>In winter, we capture solar heat through south-facing openings; this heat is stored in thermal mass walls and we prevent it from escaping through good thermal insulation and high airtightness. To ensure indoor air quality, we generate controlled air renewal that avoids energy losses. <\/p>\n<p>In summer, on the other hand, we protect ourselves from solar heat through louvered shutters, vegetated pergolas, or overhangs that prevent direct sunlight. Since our home is airtight and very well insulated, we manage to prevent the temperature from rising. When night arrives and the temperature drops, that is when we take advantage of ventilation through opposing north-south facades that generate effective cross-ventilation and cool the environment. This coolness is stored again thanks to the high airtightness and insulation and is maintained throughout the following day.   <\/p>\n<p>In intermediate seasons when the heat is not excessive, we can use cross-ventilation that generates effective air currents to reduce thermal sensation. These ventilations are generated through opposing north-south facades, which in many cases we achieve through the strategic placement of bioclimatic patios and atriums in which, in addition, we use vegetation to improve the hygrothermal regulation of the environment. <\/p>\n<p>And we must not forget that comfort is determined not only by ambient temperature but also by humidity and air current velocity.<\/p>\n<p>And how does this impact the occupants?<\/p>\n<p>Achieving thermal comfort through natural means is the best strategy we can implement to guarantee our health in an inhabited space. Humans have evolved in outdoor life where relative humidity is around the 40-60% range. It is in this range that our organism functions optimally.  <\/p>\n<p>When we turn on a heating or air conditioning system, our mucous membranes dry out, reducing our defenses and allowing viruses and bacteria to enter. This is the typical cold caused by air conditioning. <\/p>\n<p>Generally, our living spaces are excessively climate-controlled and dry, and this is why achieving hygrothermal comfort through passive means is a guarantee of health and well-being beyond the economic savings that come from achieving comfort without active heating or air conditioning systems.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond these considerations, having a home that works with the sun and natural ventilation allows us to be more connected to the exterior, to natural factors and weather, it is a way of being aware and observing our surroundings, something that we sometimes seem to forget in a hyperconnected world in which most of us spend more than 90% of our time in interior spaces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In an era where technology seems to advance relentlessly, how do you integrate home automation or smart technologies into your projects without compromising your vision of sustainability and simplicity?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In their book, &#8220;Thanatia. Material Limits of the Energy Transition,&#8221; Alicia Valero, Antonio Valero, and Guiomar Calvo, researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcirce.es\/\">CIRCE Energy Resources and Consumption Center<\/a>, warn that we are close to exhausting the geological limits of the planet and that it is urgent to initiate resource management if we want to guarantee the current civilization beyond a century of life.<\/p>\n<p>When science warns that the material resources available in the geological reserves of our planet are not sufficient to undertake the technological transformation being planned, then as designers we must start by avoiding the use of systems that depend on scarce minerals and that generate a high environmental impact on our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Architecture has functioned as shelter for human beings for thousands of years without needing to resort to technological systems, only through bioclimatic strategies and noble materials.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from resource sufficiency is a key premise in our projects. On a planet with 8 billion inhabitants, what amount of resources is it reasonable for each of us to use to achieve decent housing? If we all want to live with the comforts of home automation and smart technologies, then we would need several Planet Earths to meet our needs. Equitably distributing the planet&#8217;s limited resources is a matter of climate justice.   <\/p>\n<p>Living in harmony with the planet, using only the resources strictly necessary to achieve a decent living space where we can be happy should be a sufficient objective of architecture; the rest are needs generated by the ultra-consumerist society and on which neither our happiness nor our well-being depends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>When approaching projects in different climates, how do you adapt your design strategies to ensure that homes remain energy-efficient and respectful of the environment?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All our projects start from generic strategies that we anticipate will be coherent with the climate and environment in which we are located, but they are not implemented until they have passed through a rigorous energy demand study based on local climatology data from the last 50 years as well as forecasts of variation due to the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Today we can know the maximum and minimum temperature that each room of a home will have throughout the year according to the construction systems and materials we are using and the forecast of exterior climatology.<\/p>\n<p>Once we have data and a 3D model that includes sunlight exposure, ventilation, humidity forecast, and air renewals as well as the definition of construction systems, materials, and thicknesses, that is when we can begin decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>These models allow us to make intervention and bioclimatic strategy decisions adapted to each of the elements of a building. We define insulation thickness with variations of centimeters, the selection of glazing and opacity for each of the facades (we will not use the same glazing in a north-facing opening as in a south-facing one), or even the size of bioclimatic patios to allow light passage according to sunlight exposure during the winter and summer solstices, among many other decisions based on rigorous data and forecasts. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The name &#8220;Slow Studio&#8221; evokes a deliberate, reflective philosophy. How do you manage time in your projects to maintain this mindset, considering the demands and deadlines of the construction world? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reality is that the type of client who comes to us is a client with a certain ecological awareness who is looking for a team aligned with these values. While conceiving a project in a deliberate and conscious way is not at odds with managing it rigorously and efficiently. <\/p>\n<p>For us, the key is to dedicate the necessary time both to listening to our families and to developing an executive project with high rigor and detail that allows, once the work is tendered, meeting closed and strict deadlines and investment budgets with firm contracts that establish penalties for non-compliance by the contractor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has been your greatest challenge so far in implementing a bioclimatic home and how did you manage to overcome it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, the main challenge of sustainability and bioclimatism is the constant struggle against the budget.<\/p>\n<p>In the studio, we have made a clear commitment to paying the real cost of our actions. If I build with fossil materials such as concrete or steel, I am assuming an environmental debt in the form of CO2 emissions that become a mortgage for our children and future generations. <\/p>\n<p>We decided not to pass the environmental debt on to others; we decided to commit to materials that do not harm our planet such as wood, earth, and plant fibers\u2014these are materials with a real cost that we have decided to assume.<\/p>\n<p>We have taken on the responsibility of carrying this out and achieving projects that ensure excellent quality of life, that respect the health of people and the environment, but that are also economically viable.<\/p>\n<p>This involves many hours of struggle in the studio, with construction details, with suppliers, with manufacturers, with clients and developers. Both to adjust and adapt projects, and to develop innovative solutions that allow us to build with natural and healthy materials of reduced impact. <\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, one of the working premises to achieve this is sufficiency.<\/p>\n<p>How many square meters are necessary to live? What comforts can I do without without reducing quality of life? What finishes provide nothing more than aesthetic value, increasing the budget but not the quality of the project?  <\/p>\n<p>Another key aspect is also client awareness; when I firmly believe in what I do and can demonstrate that it works, the client begins to believe in us and allows us to make radical decisions such as leaving materials exposed, completely eliminating the heating or cooling system, or reducing the surface area of their home to invest in materials and bioclimatic systems that will improve their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In your experience, what is the main barrier for people to opt for more sustainable and efficient housing, and what role do architects play in overcoming those obstacles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We dare to affirm that it is a triple barrier that must be overcome, each one a little more difficult but not impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The first barrier is mainly the lack of awareness among both clients and professionals. Here it is a matter of those of us who are convinced explaining it to the world to reach more and more people; scientists affirm that only a small percentage of society that is truly convinced of something is necessary to motivate change, and we are working on that. <\/p>\n<p>This is why part of the studio&#8217;s dedication focuses on the non-profit task of climate activism, with the objective of reaching more professionals and people who understand the need to prioritize the climate emergency in all aspects of our lives and especially in inhabited spaces and in the architecture and construction sector.<\/p>\n<p>Once this first awareness barrier is overcome, the second barrier arrives, which is training. We know many colleagues who tell us that they are concerned and want to contribute and add value but do not know where to start. In this sense, we believe it is necessary to form networks, seek professionals in the same situation; there are many groups fighting for sustainability in architecture, technical associations that are getting started, and many courses and training programs where you can find both tools and colleagues with whom to join forces and exchange concerns.  <\/p>\n<p>And when we are ready, aware, and trained, then comes the third barrier, which is of course economic. There are professionals with good training who know what they have to do, but when they get down to work, costs skyrocket and they have to start cutting materials and construction solutions that are respectful of health and the environment. <\/p>\n<p>How to overcome this third economic barrier?<\/p>\n<p>Here two key issues arise:<\/p>\n<p>The first is that we must start from awareness. The client has to understand that it is essential, and the second is achievement; we have to make it viable without causing economic harm or limiting project scope. <\/p>\n<p>In both issues, the architect&#8217;s role is key and starts with the question:<\/p>\n<p>Why is it more expensive to build sustainably? The answer lies in the materials. <\/p>\n<p>Fossil materials such as concrete, steel, or plastics are very cheap at the cost of production based on fossil fuels that are very cheap for us and very expensive for the environment. The environmental cost of using these materials is charged to the account of future generations and the millions of people who are already suffering today from the consequences of the climate crisis in which we are immersed. <\/p>\n<p>When I build a building with a carbon footprint of 600 kg\/CO2 per m2, what is actually happening is that these 600 kg\/m2 that I save become a debt for others. This is a tremendous climate injustice that we cannot tolerate as architects or as human beings. <\/p>\n<p>Thus, we must begin to account for the cost of our buildings not only in economic terms but in environmental terms, and it is not acceptable to pass the bill to others.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, for us, the awareness strategy is different when we speak with the end client or with a developer.<\/p>\n<p>The end client thinks their footprint is small and you cannot talk to them about the environmental impact\u2014at a planetary level\u2014of their home, but you can talk to them about well-being, health, quality of life, comfort, reduction of energy consumption; this is where you have the winning hand with natural materials. In most cases, the extra budget in the case of single-family homes is achieved through the reduction of built m2, maximizing usable meters with innovative and flexible designs, reducing the material resources we use, through simple and exposed construction solutions, and carrying out passive design that allows simplifying and reducing investment in active installations. <\/p>\n<p>When we speak with a developer, however, here the impact is greater; a single person is doing business building living spaces for many families, and here we can enter into environmental and social consciousness. The fact of promoting a housing complex generates a profit at a high percentage that we can adjust to a certain extent, reducing their margin in favor of the common good. In most cases, it is about demonstrating that it is viable and that the additional cost is minimal and should be acceptable to reduce their environmental impact and maximize social benefit. This again places all the responsibility on the architect, who must move heaven and earth to negotiate with manufacturers within this small margin, seeking solutions that optimize construction and allow building with natural materials of reduced impact without an additional cost that compromises the project&#8217;s viability. The question is whether we have overcome the first barrier well and whether we are sufficiently aware and committed to carry out this struggle without faltering.    <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to young architects who wish to specialize in sustainable and bioclimatic architecture? Where should they begin their training and career? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On our website, we have a compilation of all the key training programs, as well as the essential books that have most inspired us.
